Abstract

The expansion of the commercial sector in Sant’Ana do Livramento corresponds to the same period in which the presence of arab immigrants in the municipality intensified. In this sense, this research aims to analyze the contribution of arab immigrants' trade to the development process of Sant'Ana do Livramento/RS, a Brazilian municipality that borders the city of Rivera in Uruguay. Methodologically, the research is characterized as quantitative, exploratory and descriptive. The research techniques adopted were literature review and primary data collection. The data were collected through the application of 62 questionnaires, containing closed and open questions to arab merchants in the municipality. The results indicate that, with respect to commercial establishments and through the provision of services, arab immigrants play an important role in the santanense society, either by generating jobs, paying taxes, attracting tourists or by the local investments they make, thus contributing to the process of local development.
