Socioeconomic characterization of urban horticulture in Parauapebas, Pará, Brazil

Urban expansion has had a significant impact on food production and consumption, highlighting urban agriculture as an important tool for achieving food self-sufficiency and reducing food scarcity in urban areas. Although previous studies have highlighted the advantages of urban agriculture, such as the use of idle land and improved quality of life, in the Amazon region, especially in Pará, research and support initiatives are still incipient, requiring further progress in understanding the interactions of this sector with urban societies and formulating specific public policies. In this context, this study presents a novel approach by analyzing in detail the socioeconomic profile and productive dynamics of urban horticulture in a peripheral neighborhood of Parauapebas, Pará. The research, conducted with 18 farmers, revealed that production is primarily intended for self-consumption and commercialization, constituting the main occupation of the interviewees. Gaps in activity management, lack of regular technical assistance, and low levels of education were observed, factors that can impact the efficiency and quality of production. The results highlight the importance of strategies that promote capacity building in agricultural management, technical assistance, and sustainable practices. Furthermore, they demonstrate the need for public policies directed towards urban agriculture in peripheral regions, including financial incentives, adequate infrastructure, and training programs, with the potential to strengthen the local economy and improve food security.
