Abstract

The article analyzes the development of the municipalities of Pará from determinant aspects of their urban infrastructure. In this sense, an Urban Infrastructure Index (UII) was prepared to measure the relative development of the available infrastructure, to verify which factors determine this development and to rank the municipalities according to different degrees of infrastructure (High, Medium and Low). The model was conceived from a factor analysis that identified two factors that explain 91.12% of the total data variance. The results reveal that the vast majority of municipalities (61.11%) were classified as having a low degree of infrastructure and that only 3.47% were considered as having a high degree, with a good part of these being located in the Belém Metropolitan Region (RMB) where, historically, the largest public and private investments have been concentrated. This reality demonstrates the need to implement more effective and synergistic measures in public investments, carried out by the State and municipalities, as a way of stimulating the economic environment conducive to facing vital challenges related to the quality of life of Pará, taking into account that the state of Pará and the Amazon, in general, show low performance in the most varied socio-environmental and economic indicators.
