O trabalho discute alguns dos principais problemas da competitividade internacional brasileira, mais especificamente no que se refere a bens manufaturados altamente tecnológicos. Com base nos postulados da Teoria Evolucionária busca-se evidenciar, de um lado, as carências nacionais no referido setor e, de outro, como esta problemática pode interferir no desempenho econômico do país. Dentre as principais contribuições merecem destaque a questão da existência de um hiato tecnológico entre as economias do mundo, assim como os significativos investimentos em Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento (P&D) necessários no desenvolvimento de tecnologia de fronteira para a inserção no mercado internacional. O Brasil está diretamente ligado a essa problemática na medida em que mantém relações comerciais com países econômica e tecnologicamente mais desenvolvidos. A manutenção e, em especial, a ampliação deste hiato tecnológico apontam para a intensificação dos problemas comerciais brasileiros com o passar dos anos.
