Urban solid waste management at the Paranapanema Pontal: practices adopted in four municipalities in the region

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the management of solid waste in four municipalities of Pontal do Paranapanema, Álvares Machado - SP, Pirapozinho - SP, Presidente Prudente - SP e Tarabai - SP)  highlighting the environmental management challenges faced by municipal and cooperative managers. The methodology used fell on applied research, using field research, qualitative approach and the method was deductive. The techniques employed were interviewing and unsystematic observation. As a result, it was found that the situation of urban solid waste management in the municipalities studied presents several difficulties such as insufficient funds, lack of human material with the necessary skills and lack of planning. It is evident from the research that most municipalities are not prepared to adapt the National Policy on Solid Waste within the deadline expected by the Law, and that social debate is the great tool to minimize the challenges proposed by managers.
