The article focuses on the theme of environmental injustice involving traditional communities. The aim was to analyze the process of dissolution of faxinais and the emergence of caívas in Santa Catarina as a result of environmental conflicts. The study was based on a bibliographic review, on information collected in a research already completed and on preliminary data from an ongoing research, carrying out a critical reflection based on the perspectives of political ecology and environmental justice. The work suggests that the breakdown of faxinals is characterized as a situation of environmental conflict and injustice. We consider that the caívas case reveals a potential for reinvention and resistance to modernization processes, making a not merely instrumental use of nature. We also emphasize the lack of studies about the way of life in the caívas and the need to conduct in-depth research to understand them.
