The search for efficiency in the provision of public services must be unremitting, especially in times of serious fiscal crisis. What can be said about this at federal universities in Brazil? The objective of this study is to seek evidence regarding the level of technical-comparative efficiency of Brazilian federal universities, through the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The proposed model used to achieve this objective was the input-oriented CCR. Joint data from 2008 to 2018 were analyzed at 53 federal public universities and data from the Federal Government's Integrated Financial Administration System were used. It was found that the Federal University of Pará was the most efficient - considered a benchmark. Suggestions are made for efficiency gains based on the results obtained.
