Characteristics, importance and challenges of family farm in Haiti: An analysis of Fond’oies – Léogâne - Haiti

Family farm has been the subject of growing analysis and debate worldwide, given the recognition of its role in promoting development, overcoming rural poverty and producing healthier and more sustainable food. The objective of this research is to present the socioeconomic characteristics, the importance and the current challenges of family farm in Haiti, deepening the analysis in the communal section of Fond’oies, municipality of Léogâne. To elaborate the work, a bibliographic review, analysis of secondary data and application of a questionnaire with 20 farmers from the Fond'oies region were used, who were randomly selected. The results of this study show that Haitian family farm, despite being a strategic segment for achieving social stability, food security and economic growth, has historically faced restrictions that limit its potential and importance. This can also be seen in Fond'oies, given that farmers face several challenges, such as the lack of basic services, low education, economic vulnerability, absence of effective and comprehensive agricultural policies, environmental catastrophes, among others. This group faces difficulties that are so deep and ingrained that their importance and relevance ends up being weakened.
