Application of the maderus method in agroecological and conventional family agriculture properties in the state of Paraná, Brazil: A comparison of cases

This study undertakes a comparison of sustainability indicators in properties of agroecological family farming and conventional family farming, located in the Southwest and West of Paraná (Brazil), respectively. It is noteworthy that obtaining sustainability indices is essential for preparing plans and actions that guide sustainable development. The Maderus method, proposed by Hein (2019), was used to survey and calculate the indicators. The Sustainable Rural Development Index (IDRS) obtained was 7.97 for the agroecological property and 8.49 for the conventional family farming. Critical points were identified in both areas: professional qualification; rural accounting and management; financial flow; and associativism and market access. The conventional property stands out in the indicators of access to rural credit; access to goods and services; housing condition; satisfaction with the rural environment; continuity and succession; productivity; profitability; and available resources, which justifies the higher score obtained in the IDRS compared to the agroecological property. However, we noted that the agroecological property outperforms the other one in indicators related to environmental sustainability, such as the use of pesticides, sustainable technologies, and environmental adequacy. This is one of the first studies using the Maderus method to compare conventional and agroecological cases, and we suggest that further studies are undertaken using the methodology in a larger sample of properties in this region.
