Abstract

This study aims to explore how families perceive food waste in the domestic environment, focusing on the behaviors and attitudes that contribute to this issue. The research addresses the question: what factors influence food waste practices among families? The analysis identified three key factors shaping perceptions of waste: Environmental, Economic, and Waste-related. Through Cluster Analysis, two distinct consumer groups were identified: ‘Reflectie Consumers,’ who exhibit greater awareness and more sustainable practices, and ‘Inattentive Consumers’, ‘who are less aware of the issue and more prone to waste’. The results showed that ‘Reflective Consumers’ tend to plan their shopping and meals more carefully, leading to lower levels of waste, while ‘Inattentive Consumers’ often purchase and prepare food in excess, significantly contributing to waste. These differences suggest that waste reduction strategies should be tailored to address the specific behaviors and needs of each group, with a focus on raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices among ‘Inattentive Consumers’. The study concludes by highlighting the importance of targeted public policies and educational campaigns to address these behavioral differences and more effectively reduce food waste.
