Design and coffee: A study on the feasibility of reusing coffee husk in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil

The present study addresses the development of artifacts from coffee husks, a proposition achieved through the interaction of Design knowledge with Social Sciences and Applied Technologies. The aim is to constitute projects and actions related to local sustainable development. The objective is to reveal the reuse of coffee husks for the manufacture of craft objects. The research locus was the municipality of Conceição das Pedras, in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where an empirical study was conducted using two approaches: the first involves gathering field information about coffee and its potentialities, and the second involves the application and analysis of semi-structured interviews. By examining the potential of crafting with coffee husks, we can highlight aspects of the local cultural identity and its income generation perspectives. As a market product, the identity and history of the place were incorporated into the prototype of the artifact, which demonstrated a resistant material, relevant to the demands of sustainable development. This relevance is based on the unique characteristics of the territory and the application of new social materials and technologies through local processes.
