We shall push forward!! Indigenous articulation and participation in the fight for rights and citizenship

In spite of being recognized as subjects of rights by the Federal Constitution of 1988, Brazilian indigenous peoples have been targets of systematic attacks by national governments, either conservatives or progressives. In this article, supported by a doctoral level engaged research, we present an overview of the indigenous issue in the country, and a brief account of how these peoples were “included” in the architecture of participation, in their fight for recognition, rights and self-determination. Still, based on the observation of the experience and perception of the Pataxó People of Bahia, we bring a reflection on the possible directions and challenges of this participation, and the indication of multiple trenches of action, either by resisting within political institutions, or by strengthening their grassroots organizations.
