Bukele, El Salvador and the last bastion of political populism in latin america

Abstract

This article aims to present some considerations about the current president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele and the impact of his work as a statesman throughout Latin America and the world. His way of managing public affairs has attracted attention, mainly due to his populist way of managing social relations. His modus operandi is considered, by many, as the reinvigoration of a new form of dictatorship, which does not occur in a merely brutal way, but rather through the media and a persuasive speech capable of manipulating the masses and instilling new ways of thinking social problems in people, overcoming complex issues and multifaceted solutions. From the point of view of drug trafficking, for example, our text presents the ways in which Bukele committed the Salvadoran reality and how his sui generis method of tackling the issue points out possible fractures that, possibly in the very near future, could engender much bigger problems. is based on the need to understand this new type of populism, much more based on a salvationism typical of totalitarian speeches and stances than really centered on the search for peace and/or social justice. The article methodology adopted was of a bibliographic nature with a qualitative-hermeneutic bias.
