The article aimed to classify, analyze and specialize the level of agricultural modernity of the microregions of the state of Bahia. The Agricultural Modernity Index (IMA) was used as an indicator built from multivariate statistics, specifically, factor analysis with data from the 2006 Agricultural Census. From the factorial scores, the IMA was built, which showed the presence of technological structural heterogeneity in the segment. in Bahia. Of the 32 microregions, 18 had lower than average AMI, characterizing the coexistence of pockets of agricultural modernity with microregions on the fringes of technological development. All the microregions of the far west of Bahia, the state's agricultural frontier in the region known as MATOPIBA, where export-oriented grain production predominates, are among the highly modern microregions as well as the microregions to the south of the state where is concentrated the second largest forest and pulp cluster in the country and the most important agricultural crop in the state, cocoa, both export oriented.
