This article seeks to problematize the criticism of colonial permanence in the urban context of large cities in Latin America based on the song "A Cidade", by the band Chico Science e Nação Zumbi. For the analysis, we will use as a study parameter the social relations developed in the urban context of the city of Recife, in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Based on the lyrics of the song, released in 1994, the aim is to observe, using official indicators, the social transformations that indicate the overcoming/permanence of a colonial condition that defines patterns of equality/inequality of class and race in the contemporary dynamics of the city of Recife. In order to achieve this objective, the study uses the Atlas of Violence and the Atlas of Human Development and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).as a database.
Keywords: Decolonialism; Mangue Movement; Recife; Brazilian Northeast.
