Abstract

Gender mainstreaming in water management aims to ensure that the experiences and concerns of men and women are part of the preparation, implementation, control and evaluation of water policies and programs. Such integration is necessary insofar as women are minorities in the highest decision-making bodies on water resources, but are greatly affected by their scarcity. In addition, women deal with water daily for generations. Also, they represent half of the world's population, and sustainable development cannot happen without the contribution of such a significant portion of the population. This research aimed to identify the perception of water managers in the municipality of Ouro Preto/MG regarding women's participation in management. This objective was achieved through the application of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and observations in the meetings of the research bodies and councils. A greater male presence was observed in the managerial and operational positions of the organs and in the management councils. Although women are outnumbered, they assume an active position. Respondents report observing a greater presence of men in meetings, requiring measures to encourage the participation of women. Also, differences in functions were reported according to gender in the workplace. According to the perception of counselors and workers, the popular participation, in general, in the organs and councils is not expressive. There is a need for training courses to ensure greater equity of forces within the environmental debate on the subject, allowing more equitable debates.
