2. Editorial Policy – Objectives and Scope

Revista Contexto & Saúde is a scientific journal of Unijuí, linked to the Graduate Program (Stricto Sensu) in Comprehensive Health Care, which, since 2001, has aimed to disseminate technical and scientific work on topics related to the field of Health Sciences. The scope of the journal encompasses the dissemination of research results that address advances in the health–disease–care process, as well as in the knowledge and applicability of new chemical and biological processes in health. In this journal, the publication of studies related to epidemiological, care, and educational aspects in health, whether experimental or applied, is understood as a way to support and qualify health care in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary manner.

Revista Contexto & Saúde follows an open access policy, with its articles being made available in full, free of charge. The journal operates under a continuous flow system (rolling pass), with articles being published once they have been peer-reviewed and approved.

Manuscripts submitted must not have been previously sent to other publications (electronic or print). Contributions must be original, unpublished, and not under review for publication by another journal, nor published in conference proceedings.

Revista Contexto & Saúde accepts unpublished articles in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and the submission process is conducted online.

All manuscripts received are initially reviewed by one of the members of the Editorial Board. Subsequently, articles are sent to two reviewers, following a double-blind peer review process. Reviewers evaluate the manuscript and recommend whether or not it should be published. Finally, the editor, in accordance with the journal’s standards, assesses the scientific contribution of the article and considers the reviewers’ opinions to determine whether the submission is accepted, publishable with modifications, requires further review, or does not meet the requirements for publication.

Revista Contexto & Saúde does not charge authors any submission fees. After acceptance, a publication fee of R$ 600.00 applies.

Revista Contexto & Saúde is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

3. Editorial Process

3. 1. Stages of the Editorial Process

Revista Contexto & Saúde adopts standardized editorial processes and quality assurance practices at all stages, starting from the receipt of the manuscript.

Pre-analysis: Initially, the article is received by the technical team, which checks compliance with the journal’s guidelines. After this, the manuscript is reviewed by members of the Editorial Board, who verify its adherence to the general criteria of the journal and its editorial policy. Articles will be rejected at this stage if they: a) are merely literature reviews; excerpts from dissertations, theses, projects, or research reports without proper adaptation; b) are excessively descriptive and insufficiently analytical; c) do not present a significant contribution to the field of knowledge; d) do not comply with the journal’s publication guidelines. Rejected articles will be archived, while those approved will move on to the next stage.

Peer Review: Articles will be evaluated by at least two subject-matter experts selected from the ad hoc reviewers who are members of the Scientific Committee/Reviewers of the journal, affiliated with different institutions in Brazil and abroad. The evaluation follows a double-blind peer review process, in which both the reviewer’s and the author’s identities are concealed. Review reports may or may not be published along with the article. Reviewers will assess the manuscript considering the following guidelines: clarity of writing and readability; alignment with scientific standards; currency and adequacy of the theoretical and conceptual framework; clarity and alignment of the research object with the journal’s focus and scope; clearly stated objectives consistent across abstract, introduction, and conclusion; well-explained methodology appropriate to the article’s aims; clear presentation and discussion of results in dialogue with the theoretical-conceptual framework; concise conclusions compatible with the methodology and results; originality and contribution to the field. After completing their descriptive review and submitting it on the journal’s platform, the reviewer must choose one of the following recommendations: Accept; Mandatory Revisions; or Reject.

Reviewer Reports: After peer review, the editor forwards the reviewers’ reports to the corresponding author, indicating aspects that require correction, addition, or improvement. The author must carry out the modifications within the established deadline.

Author’s Revision: When resubmitting the manuscript, the author must highlight the changes made in the text and attach a detailed response letter, explaining how each suggestion was addressed or, when necessary, justifying any disagreements. This phase is essential to ensure scientific rigor and editorial quality before the final decision.

Editorial Decision: Based on the reviewers’ reports and the revised version, the Editors of the Journal will communicate the editorial decision regarding acceptance or rejection of the manuscript. If further adjustments in content or structure are necessary, these will be indicated to the authors, who must provide them. Editors may also suggest formatting adjustments to align the text with the journal’s editorial and graphic standards.

Translation into English: Revista Contexto & Saúde publishes all articles in English. Therefore, articles submitted in Portuguese or Spanish must be translated into English after acceptance. The Editor will contact the authors to arrange this process.

Pre-proof Publication: After acceptance, the journal will publish the accepted version without modifications, marked with a watermark indicating that it is an unedited version of the article, along with the following disclaimer:

This is a preliminary, unedited version of a manuscript accepted for publication in Revista Contexto & Saúde. As a service to our readers, we are making this early version available as accepted. The manuscript will still undergo copyediting, formatting, and author approval before being published in its final form.

At this stage, the article will already receive a DOI. Later, the editor will contact the authors for the publication of the final version.

Portuguese Language Review: All approved articles undergo linguistic review and reference checking. Minor adjustments that do not affect comprehension are made by the reviewers.

Typesetting: The article will be typeset according to the journal’s final publication format, respecting its graphic and visual standards.

Proofs: The typeset version will be sent to the author for final review, allowing only linguistic adjustments or minor corrections that do not compromise the content or alter the structure of the article. Any corrections must be submitted within the deadline established by the Editorial Office.

Final Version: After approval of the final proof, the pre-proof version will be replaced with the definitive version on the journal’s website.

3. 2. Quality Control of the Editorial Process

Editorial Quality: The editor and the editorial board are responsible for ensuring the quality of both the published content and the entire editorial process. Both must strictly adhere to the principles of editorial ethics, ensuring compliance with each stage of the editorial workflow and the standardization of evaluation criteria. The journal publicly discloses the names of the editors, along with their institutional affiliations and ORCID identifiers.

Quality of Ad Hoc Reviewers: The selection of ad hoc reviewers is rigorous and aims to guarantee the quality and impartiality of the evaluations. Reviewers are chosen based on their active and productive contributions in the subject area of the manuscript, with recent and recognized expertise in the field. In addition, their history of previous reviews is considered, prioritizing those who have demonstrated commitment to deadlines and quality in their analyses. The journal ensures that reviewers do not have conflicts of interest and that they have no co-authorship or recent collaborations with the authors of the manuscript under review. The list of ad hoc reviewers who provided evaluations for the journal is published annually.

Quality of Editorial Decisions: Editorial decisions must prioritize, above all, the scientific validity of the article and its relevance to the academic community. Editors must be guided by the policies established by the editorial board of the journal and must respect the legal requirements related to defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. Decisions are based on the reports issued by ad hoc reviewers, focusing on the quality and scientific merit of the manuscript. The evaluation process is conducted impartially, without any discrimination related to the authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, nationality, or political position. The journal adopts a double-blind peer review system, in which reviewers and authors remain mutually anonymous, in order to avoid any type of bias during the evaluation process.

Post-Publication Quality: The journal follows an open access model, which means that all articles are made available to the public immediately and free of charge as soon as they are published online. Anyone may access, read, and examine the full content of the texts freely and without restrictions, thereby fostering transparency and scientific reproducibility.

The journal welcomes comments, questions, and suggestions regarding published articles. Readers may submit a letter to the Editor with their considerations if they wish.

In cases where potential scientific errors or ethical issues are identified in a published article, we request that readers contact the editorial team. Once notified, the necessary procedures for investigation will be initiated. If flaws are confirmed, appropriate measures will be taken, such as issuing a correction or formal retraction, in accordance with international ethical guidelines.

4. Editorial Policies and Research Ethics

4. 1. Editorial Code of Conduct: Statement on Publication Misconduct

Revista Contexto & Saúde is committed to ethics in research and in the publication of results. The highest standards of ethical behavior are expected from all parties involved in the journal’s publication process.

The journal adopts the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) - https://publicationethics.org/core-practices and the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors - https://publicationethics.org/files/Code_of_conduct_for_journal_editors_Mar11.pdf

Commitment to Ethics and Quality: Revista Contexto & Saúde upholds the highest rigor throughout all stages of manuscript evaluation and publication, following principles of ethical conduct on the part of authors, editors, reviewers, and the editorial team. All submissions are assessed on their merits and scientific contributions, ensuring that each editorial step complies with best practices and the ethical standards of scholarly publishing.

Additionally, the journal systematically screens manuscripts for plagiarism using the Plagius tool, as part of its commitment to academic integrity. In cases where plagiarism is identified—i.e., when a substantial portion of the text is identical to a previously published article—the Editor-in-Chief, together with the support team at Editora UNIJUÍ, will proceed as follows:
a) Evidence of detected plagiarism will be sent to the author(s), requesting a response;
b) If the response is unsatisfactory or the text is not corrected, the article will not be published.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal must fully comply with the editorial guidelines, ethical principles of scientific publishing, and the journal’s quality criteria:

Consent: All authors must declare their consent to the submission and possible publication of the article, acknowledging active participation in the preparation of the manuscript and approval of its final version submitted for review (see the Article Cover Letter template).

Authors’ Contributions: All authors made a significant contribution to the preparation of the article; no relevant authorship has been omitted.

Originality of the Work: The submitted manuscript is original, has not been previously published—fully or partially—in any medium, and is not under simultaneous review by another journal. The authors guarantee the novelty of the article and adherence to ethical publishing standards.

Permission to Reproduce Third-Party Material: The article does not include third-party copyrighted material without proper authorization. If excerpts, images, tables, or any other third-party content are included, the authors must explicitly present permission for reproduction in both print and electronic formats, clearly indicating the source and credits.

Ad Hoc Reviewers: Ad hoc reviewers have no employment, academic, or personal ties with the authors of the submitted manuscripts, thereby ensuring impartiality and independence in the evaluation of articles.

Use of Automated Tools in Review: Ad hoc reviewers must conduct manuscript evaluations with rigor and responsibility, providing critical and well-founded analyses. The use of automated tools—such as chatbots or artificial intelligence systems—to draft reports or evaluations is expressly prohibited, as it may compromise the quality, confidentiality, and integrity of the editorial process. Reviews must be carried out personally and carefully, ensuring the ethical and scientific standards required by the journal.

4. 5. Authorship and Contributions Policies

The journal adopts strict criteria for defining authorship. All listed authors must have made significant contributions to the conception, development, or writing of the article, and the omission of any relevant authorship is not permitted. It is the responsibility of the authors to ensure that all individuals who meet the authorship criteria are properly recognized. This policy aims to ensure transparency, proper attribution of credit, and the integrity of academic work.

4. 6. Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest in research occurs when one or more participants in the process—including researchers, editors, or reviewers—have affiliations or interests that could compromise the integrity of the research or limit impartiality in the evaluation of the study. For Revista Contexto & Saúde, authors must complete a Cover Letter indicating whether or not any conflict of interest exists. This letter must be submitted along with the manuscript.

4. 7. Post-Publication Corrections Policies

Any addition or modification to the submitted text must be made exclusively before the acceptance of the manuscript and only if approved by the Editor-in-Chief. The Editor-in-Chief will consider additions or modifications to the text after manuscript acceptance only under exceptional circumstances. During the period in which the Editor-in-Chief evaluates the request, the publication of the manuscript will be suspended.

Similarly, additions (or changes) to authorship will only be allowed during the review stage upon a formal and justified request submitted by the authors.

However, if an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, it is their obligation to immediately inform the Editor-in-Chief and cooperate with the editor to correct the article.

4. 7. 1. Policies on Publishing Addenda

The publication of an Addendum occurs in cases where there are no text corrections, but additional information needs to be included regarding an already published document. Addenda do not contradict the original publication and are not used to correct errors; they should be used when adding information benefits the reader’s understanding of a significant part of the published contribution. See: Guide for the Registration, Tagging, and Publication of Addenda.

An article previously published in Revista Contexto & Saúde in which misconduct is identified will remain indexed in the journal’s database as retracted. The communication must include the retraction text, specifying the reasons for retracting the article. See: Guide for the Registration, Tagging, and Publication of Retractions.

This process may include requesting evidence from the parties involved to support their claims. Revista Contexto & Saúde will make a good-faith decision regarding the removal of the allegedly unlawful material, and all stages of the investigation and decision-making process will be properly documented by the editorial team.

We recognize our commitment to ensuring that Revista Contexto & Saúde maintains the highest quality standards and is free of errors, while understanding that occasional mistakes may occur.
