The role of YouTube videos in disseminating the use of MMS (Mineral Miracle Solution)

Abstract

A product known by the acronym MMS (Mineral Miracle Solution) gained the attention of the Brazilian media in May 2019 after being associated as a false cure for autism, despite the lack of scientific evidence of its effectiveness and several reports associated with the negative consequences of its use. The purpose of this study was to analyze YouTubevideos that either stimulated the use of the substance before or after the reports. 88 videos selected by the relevance filter and in the anonymous tab were analyzed. Most videos were posted by ordinary users (82.95%) and 62.50% encouraged the consumption of MMS, although the majority (60.23%) did not mention the risks of use. It is noteworthy that 23.64% of the videos indicated the place of purchase of the substances that make up the MMS and that 93.75% of the videos published after the reports were against the consumption of the product, in addition to the popularity of the videos that did not encourage use was smaller. The use of social media as a source of information has been increasingly frequent, despite the low quality of the information conveyed, making it important for health professionals and educational institutions to appropriate these tools, in addition to the administrators themselves establishing mechanisms for verification and exclusion of fake content.
