Hypertensive and diabetic group: a health education strategy

Arterial systemic hypertension (ASH) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are prevalent pathologies present in population attended by the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the municipality of Bozano, in the countryside of the State of Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil. It has 2160 registered users, 114 of whom are diagnose with DM and 502 with ASH. Considering this data and the great demand for appointments with a Nutritionist, the Hypertensive and Diabetic Group was created. Objective: Empower users to acquire knowledge about their pathologies and become aware that the effectiveness of the treatment depends on their own health care actions. Methodology: Field research, exploratory, with descriptive and cross-sectional design and quantitative and qualitative approach, carried out with a group of hypertensive and diabetic patients from the Municipality of Bozano. Results: It was realized 8 meetings, adding up to 70 participants. The ages varied between 35 and 82 years, with an average of 65.47 years, with 52 (74.3%) elderly and 18 (25.7%) adults, 62.9% women. Among the participants, 35.7% reported being hypertensive, 7.1% diabetics, 21.4% hypertensive, and diabetics and 5.7% others. Most participants (65.7%) are overweight and have a high risk for cardiovascular diseases (85.7%). Participants reported having learned about diabetes and hypertension, eating healthier, drinking more water, exercising and taking care of their body and mouth hygiene. Conclusion: The meetings have a positive impact and can be consider an effective strategy of food and nutrition education for hypertension and diabetes.
