Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the motor development of premature children and to analyze the relationship between breastfeeding and motor acquisitions in the first year of life. In which 62 preterm infants of the High Risk Ambulatory, divided into 2 groups: GA - group of children who received breastfeeding; GSA - children who did not receive breastfeeding. The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) was used to evaluate children’s motor development. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, U Mann Whitney test, Pearson’s Chi-square test and Spearman’s correlation test were used. Children who received breastfeeding showed better motor performance considering the percentile (0.006) and the categorization of performance (0.03).  The longer the exclusive breastfeeding time, the higher the percentile of motor performance of the children (rho= 0,38; p=0,002). The breastfeeding impacts the motor development of premature children and the longer the time of exclusive breastfeeding, the better the motor performance of the children.
