Acquisition of the category of determinants in portuguese by deaf people

This study addresses an investigation of the acquisition, by deaf adults, of the Determiner Category (DP- Determiner Phrase) in written Brazilian Portuguese (BP). From the collection of naturalistic data, produced by six deaf adult subjects-informants, fluent in Libras, we explain about internal aspects and external factors that characterize the acquisition of defined determinants in the writing of deaf adults with university education. Based on the generative theoretical framework, we investigated the formal features that parametrically characterize the category of determinants (D) in the native (Libras) and target (written Portuguese) languages, comparing the D features in these languages withwhat was found in the interlanguage data produced by the subject-informants. As for external factors, we tried to identify some type of interference in the acquisition of written Portuguese by our informants, in relation to the age of acquisition of Libras and/or BP; insertion in a deaf or hearing family, being a Libras speaker or not; and the level of education. As a result, we verified that the category of determinants in BP is presented in different stages of interlanguage in the data of the subjects-informants and that the acquisition of this category occurs feature by feature, based on its formative features, among which are definition, gender, number, deixis and anaphora.
