Abstract

On December 31, 2019, China reported an outbreak of pneumonia likely to cause adult respiratory distress syndrome. The causative etiologic agent was later identified as a new coronavirus, which was named SARS-CoV-2. The disease caused by this coronavirus, known by the acronym COVID-19, spread progressively worldwide, which forced, to control its expansion, the adoption of measures such as social distancing, population confinement and strict isolation. of the sick. This strict isolation disruptively led to important changes in healthcare professional-patient / family communication, which were especially significant in communicating bad news. This text reflects, at the height of the epidemic in Galicia (Spain), the experience of communicating bad news to relatives of elderly sick COVID-19 patients. Finally, we propose a decalogue of advice on the telephone communication of bad news.
