The metamorphoses of the gaze: Mario Osorio Marques as a reader of photographic images

The article addresses the experience of an individual social actor, Mario Osorio Marques, as a reader and researcher of photographic images, in the context of the Northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The research problem raised in the article is how this social actor contributed to the construction of photographic culture in a given social context where there are very expressive photographic collections. The first part of the article addresses his importance as a reader and interpreter of images from the FIDENE/UNIJUI institutional collection. The second part addresses the importance of the book: História visual da formação de Ijuí – Rio Grande do Sul, how this work contributed decisively to the understanding of visuality, as an object of research for the construction of knowledge in the social sciences. The methodology used in the article is based on the principles of ethnography, from the perspective of understanding the cultural elements of a given individual social actor who worked in an educational institution and in the community to which he belongs.
