Abstract

Teachers play an essential role in the social context. The teacher's vocation, however, have being changing in the contemporary world, with exaggerated attributions and tasks that are not typical of their profession. This study aims to understand the perception of teachers, who works in public and private schools, about occupational stress and their consequences to health. The research is exploratory-descriptive, with a qualitative approach. Participated in this study, ten professors, from public and private institutions, from a city in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. The selection was informal, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, using the snowball technique. The date collection happened in March 2020. The answers were fully transcribed and analyzed using Minayo's theme. The reports were divided into a category, called “Occupational Stress in Teaching”, and into four subcategories: High Level of Professional Performance; Parent-School-Students Relationship; Fellow Teachers; Health harm. With this study, the importance of a promotion and prevention within the school environment, as a way to reduce health problems, is clear. Therefore, further studies are needed on preventive aspects of the teacher’s health, focused on strategies within the school environment.
